Sometimes, the hardest part about travel is waiting for your next trip. Recently, I had the pleasure of experiencing a cruise on the Royal Caribbean Liberty of the Seas, departing from Cape Liberty, New Jersey. The cruise port, just a short 3.5 to 4-hour drive from Northern Virginia, is one of the nicest and most efficient I’ve seen. With ample onsite parking, easy drop-off and pickup of passengers, and smooth embarking/disembarking processes, it set the tone for an amazing adventure.

Itinerary:

  • Day 1: Embark – Cape Liberty, New Jersey
  • Day 2: At Sea
  • Day 3: Royal Naval Dockyard, West End Bermuda
  • Day 4: Royal Naval Dockyard, West End Bermuda
  • Day 5: At Sea
  • Day 6: Disembark – Cape Liberty, New Jersey

Day 1: Setting Sail

We embarked on a six-day cruise that included two nights at the Royal Naval Dockyard in Bermuda. While some might find multiple sea days too long, we found them relaxing and filled with a variety of activities. From the casino and karaoke to magic and comedy shows, there was always something entertaining. The live music at various onboard bars created a vibrant atmosphere.

Days 3 & 4: Bermuda Bliss
Our arrival at Bermuda’s Royal Naval Dockyard was nothing short of magical. We took it easy with excursions and opted for the Glass Bottom & Sightseeing Cruise. The cruise was a delightful mix of scenic beauty and marine wonder, featuring:

  • Glass Bottom Boat: Offering spacious upper decks and large undersea viewing areas.
  • Vixen Shipwreck: Viewing the wreckage of the “Vixen”, now a vibrant marine habitat.
  • Sea Life: Spotting tropical fish, coral, and sea turtles among the sea grass beds.

One of our favorite moments was visiting the sea wall near the dockyard. Here, a pirate ship served the best Rum Swizzles, complete with a generous black rum floater for those who tipped well.

Exploring Bermuda

We kept our explorations light and decided to take a local shuttle to Bermuda’s Triangle Beach, a hidden paradise with pristine, interconnected beaches. This spot offered everything for a perfect beach day, from modern facilities to tranquil waters.

For a unique perspective of Bermuda, we hopped on the local ferry to Hamilton. The public ferry system was a reliable and scenic way to travel, offering stunning views and a refreshing sea breeze.

While in Hamilton, we couldn’t resist a visit to Mr. Chicken for some delicious hot chicken, adding a tasty local flavor to our adventure.

Last Day at Sea: Relaxation and Pampering

As our cruise neared its end, we treated ourselves to a luxurious 75-minute Hot Stone Massage onboard the Liberty of the Seas. It was the perfect way to unwind and savor our last day at sea.

Conclusion

Our trip on the Liberty of the Seas was an unforgettable experience. The food and drinks were fantastic, and the weather in Bermuda was a pleasant 70 degrees, perfect for mid-May. From the seamless departure at Cape Liberty to the relaxing sea days and the enchanting Bermuda excursions, everything exceeded our expectations. If you’re considering a cruise, the Liberty of the Seas offers a blend of adventure, relaxation, and top-notch service that’s hard to beat.
