Chicago Elimination Chamber Weekend

Chicago weekend, late winter, 1,534 miles round trip

Chicago Elimination Chamber Weekend: A 1,534-Mile Road Trip from Northern Virginia to the Windy City

Chicago in late winter feels electric. The skyline cuts sharp against Lake Michigan, restaurants glow from within, and the United Center hums with anticipation.

When Elimination Chamber weekend landed on the calendar, we skipped airport lines and chose something better: the long way. We wanted the drive to be part of the story, not just the cost of getting there.

The city just has that vibe!

What We Actually Did

We drove from Northern Virginia to Chicago and back, and the route stayed simple and smooth:
I-81 → I-68 → I-70 → I-65.

The drive carried us through West Virginia mountains, across Ohio farmland, and deep into Indiana before Chicago finally appeared on the horizon. It felt like the country slowly changing gears, then suddenly we were in a city that knows exactly how to make an entrance.

Trip stats (quick reality check)
Total Distance 1,534.8 miles
Total Drive Time 23+ hours

Crossing out of Ohio is when the drive starts to feel like a real trip.

Where We Stayed

We based ourselves in the Streeterville and River North corridor at Embassy Suites Chicago Downtown. Suite-style space changed everything for a group trip, because we could reset between meals, sightseeing, and the arena without feeling stacked on top of each other.

  • Suite layout with separate living and sleeping areas
  • Walkable access to dining and shopping
  • Quick rideshare to United Center
  • Easy access to Lake Shore Drive

Event weekends book up fast, so we recommend checking options early:

Skyline, Culture, and the Pre-Show Reset

Before we let arena energy take over the weekend, we gave ourselves a clean Chicago reset: skyline views, then a slower cultural pace. It made the whole trip feel balanced.

Tours & Attractions

Chicago Dining Moments

This weekend was always going to be food-forward. Chicago makes it easy to build your itinerary around meals, because every neighborhood has somewhere that feels like it was designed for a long dinner and a second round.

One of the surprises of the trip: the espresso martini flight at Starbucks Reserve.

Saturday Night: WWE Elimination Chamber

United Center transforms during a live WWE event. The energy is loud, immersive, and oddly communal, because everyone reacts at the same time. You can feel the whole arena moving together.

Our rule: eat before the show, arrive early, and plan your exit.
  • Arrive early to avoid rideshare congestion
  • Eat beforehand and let the arena be about the show
  • Expect cocktails around $16–$20
  • Pick a meetup spot for after, service gets chaotic

The Roadside Detour That Made the Drive Home Better

On the way back, we wanted one stop that was purely for morale. Uranus, Indiana did exactly what it promised: a reset through laughter, with almost no deviation off I-70.
